Job description
NYLAG’s Community Access Programs Unit and Employment Law Project have an immediate opening for a Temporary Staff Attorney to work on employment law cases. This temporary position is expected to be for a period of 6 months. The Temporary Attorney will be handling a former attorney’s case load, engaging with clients and providing further representation as needed. The Staff Attorney will analyze Unemployment Insurance Appeal Board cases, NYS Division of Human Rights cases and other employment law matters. The Temporary Staff Attorney will be supervised by the Project Director of the Employment Law Project and also report to the Director of the Community Access Programs Unit.

Salary Range: NYLAG is a unionized workplace, and salaries are set pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement. The current salary range for this position is between $87,210- $97,132 annually, paid at a rate for 6 months.

Job description

Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct representation, advice and consultation on employment law matters.
- Collaborate alongside the CAPU and ELP teams as they advance worker justice.
- Complete administrative duties including updating NYLAG case management records, maintaining and updating files and case notes, and assisting in grant reporting as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- JD from an accredited law school.
- One to five years of employment law experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice is preferred.
- Experience handling Unemployment Insurance Appeals preferred.
- Experience handling NYS Division of Human Rights Appeals preferred.
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills with keen attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to respond promptly to high volume communications.
- Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively with a team as well as independently.
