Job description
NYLAG seeks a highly motivated temporary staff attorney to join its staff from end of April 2026 to end of October 2026 to provide elder law and special needs legal services to older adults and individuals with disabilities. The temporary staff attorney will work on matters related to Medicaid planning and appeals, Medicare, homecare appeals, Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and advance directives and Wills, as well as other legal issues related to older adults and people with disabilities. In terms of Medicaid, the attorney will assist clients with navigating the Medicaid landscape, including eligibility and representation on complex fair hearings and external appeals relating to homecare. This attorney will also provide community and professional trainings on these topics.

Salary Range:
NYLAG is a unionized workplace, and salaries are set pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement. The current salary range for this position is between $88,265 - $101,009 depending on experience.

In terms of Medicaid, the attorney will assist clients with navigating the Medicaid landscape, including eligibility and representation on complex fair hearings and external appeals relating to homecare. This attorney will also provide community and professional trainings on these topics.
Duties and Responsibilities
This attorney’s primary responsibilities include:
- Providing direct representation, advice and consultation on elder law matters.
- Counseling, drafting and supervising the execution of advance planning documents;
- Representing clients at complex administrative fair hearings and external appeals related to Medicaid homecare;
- Meeting with clients at community-based sites and making home, hospital and nursing home visits for homebound, hospitalized and nursing home clients throughout Brooklyn.
- Conducting trainings for community-based organizations, local agencies, and other advocates in the related substantive matters;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Admission to NYS Bar is required;
- NYS notary license is required;
- Excellent communication, research and writing skills are required;
- Civil legal services, clinical, and/or fellowship experience in elder law and health law is preferred;
- Strong organizational and administrative skills are required;
- Experience working with diverse populations is preferred;
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Proficiency in Russian is preferred.
